Séminaire RER, Rappel: Corporation Unbound: The Asymmetric Society and its Networks
by Emmanuel LAZEGA 12 Feb '16

12 Feb '16

*Abstract **During the past two decades, many social scientists have advocated the notion of the “network society” to describe and analyze current societal processes, consequently announcing the “death of the society of organizations”. According to this perspective, what keeps modern societies moving are not the large, hierarchically organized and tightly bounded business firms and their norm-conforming incumbents, but increasingly hybrid, small-scale inter-organizational networks, characterized by fluid boundaries and self-organizing teams, populated by self-confident entrepreneurial free agents. This presentation challenges the usefulness of the concept of the network society for the analysis of modern societies. It argues that network forms of organizing should be conceived as part of the revival of the society of organizations, rather than as its successor. More than ever before, modern societies are driven by organizations and the related mechanisms of control and hierarchy. Building on Coleman’s theory of the “asymmetric society”, I will explore the implications of this argument for recent changes in societal and organisational structures and their outcomes. Empirical evidence from an ongoing study on the effect of political decentralisation on (organisational) networks and corruption will illustrate the argument.* Le séminaire aura lieu *de 14h à 16h** au CSO, 19 rue Amélie, 75007 Paris* (métro La Tour-Maubourg ; sonner dans la rue ; la salle de séminaire est la première porte à gauche en entrant). Bien cordialement, Sébastien Billows, Emmanuel Lazega et Claire Lemercier. -- Emmanuel Lazega, Prof. des Universités Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris CSO-CNRS, 19 rue Amélie, 75007 Paris, +331 40626570 emmanuel.lazega(a)sciencespo.fr - http://elazega.fr/
