To: fernique(a)lipn.fr Dear Prof. T. Fernique, My name Johan Nilsson and I am currently a post-doc-student in Prof. M. Baake's research group at Bielefeld university, Germany. Prof. Baake passed on your email about a post-doc position in the QuasiCool project to me. I find this project interesting and after reading the project summary, I think I have a background and interests that would be suitable for this position. Briefly, my background is a Ph.D in mathematics with undergraduate studies with as well in computer science, both theoretical and programming. During my research I have been looking at problems in symbolic dynamics and combinators where computers have played a vital part. I intend to send you an application for this post-doc position, but I have a few open questions. My main concern is that I am a bit unsure how to formulate the research project part in the application, and how detailed this should be.

by Thomas Fernique 30 Jul '14

30 Jul '14

Thomas

Fwd: Post-doc ANR "QuasiCool: Quasicrystals cooling: from random tilings to, aperiodic tilings"
by Thomas Fernique 05 Jul '14

-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Post-doc ANR "QuasiCool: Quasicrystals cooling: from random tilings to,aperiodic tilings" Date: Sat, 05 Jul 2014 09:40:24 +0200 From: Thomas Fernique <thomas.fernique(a)lif.univ-mrs.fr> To: Mathieu Sablik <sablik(a)cmi.univ-mrs.fr>, Thomas Fernique <fernique(a)lipn.fr> -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Post-Doc position within the ANR project "QuasiCool" -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The ANR project "QuasiCool: Quasicrystals cooling: from random tilings to,aperiodic tilings" will recruit one post-doc position for a period of one year which may be renewed once. The project is a young researchers project funded by the French National Research Agency. It aims to understand from a theoretical viewpoint, namely in terms of tilings, the structure and the growth of quasicrystals, which are non-periodic but ordered materials discovered in 1982 (Chemistry Nobel prize in 2011). Tilings are at the crossroad of probability theory, dynamical systems, computability and combinatorics. They form an active research domain of theoretical computer science and mathematics (see, e.g., the results on random tilings obtained by the Fields medalist Andrei Okounkov). A brief summary of the project can be found at: http://lipn.univ-paris13.fr/~fernique/temp/quasicool.pdf The project is funded for 4 years from January 2013. The permanent members are: Olivier Bodini, Thomas Fernique, Damien Regnault and Alexandra Ugolnikova (Paris), Nicolas Bédaride and Mathieu Sablik (Marseille), Eric Remila (St-Etienne) and Florent Becker (Orleans). The post-doc position will be for an initial period of one year and should start from no later than january 2015, with the possibility of a second year. * VENUE The post-doc researcher will work in any of the laboratories involved in the project (in accordance with the recruited researcher's profile). The postdoc is expected to interact with the researchers in all the sites of the project. * SALARY The net salary will be around 2300 euro/month. This net salary is then subject to income tax. * RESEARCH AREA Candidates should have a strong background in mathematics or theoretical computer sciences, with a particular emphasis on one or some of the followings fields: - combinatorics - computability - dynamical systems (symbolic dynamics) - probability (stochastic processes) - discrete geometry A taste for programming (simulation of stochastic processes) and an interest in underlying physical motivations would be valued. * APPLICATION PROCEDURE The application should be sent by email to fernique(a)lipn.fr (Subject: Post-doc QuasiCool), before *October 30th*, including a resume, a list of publications and a research project (1 page), as well as two names of possible references. * IMPORTANT DATES - Deadline for application October 30th, 2014 - Suggested starting date from October, 2014 * Contact: fernique(a)lipn.fr --
